THE SECRET OF SILENCE - What's New | BACÀN residency project #2
THE SECRET OF SILENCE is a site-specific audiovisual opera realized during the artistic residency What’s New by BACÀN at the Museo del Risorgimento e Resistenza di Vicenza in July 2022.
It's a storytelling of the Museo del Risorgimento e Resistenza in Vicenza, through a multidisciplinary language given by the combination of visual arts and improvised music.
The title encourages us to reflect on the profound meaning of the word 'silence', suggesting its value perceived in the absence of verbality. The shooting approach, simple and authentic, uses documentary filmmaking as a medium of expression. It is developed through black and white shots of the Museum, Villa Guiccioli park, in which it is located, the museum collection and naturalistic elements.
Against the almost stunning silence of the spaces, crossed by soft noises such as crunching of leaves, singing of cicadas or murmurs of visitors, it is not necessary to use strictly verbal language to create a storytelling. In this environment, the museum becomes a place of contemplation and silence can open doors to an invisible feeling that the word perhaps prevents.
To the human voice, the arduous mission of recalling the tragedy of the war, thanks to the free interpretation of Vicenza partisan women testimonies. This is made possible through singing and acting, which, together with the sounds of the other instruments, compose the musical part of the opera. Music and images do not play a marginal role, but complement each other, creating a true synergy.

THE SECRET OF SILENCE è un’opera audiovisiva site-specific frutto del progetto di residenza artistica What’s New curato da Associazione Culturale BACÀN nel luglio 2022. Attraverso un linguaggio multidisciplinare dato dalla fusione di arti visive e musica improvvisata, racconta il Museo del Risorgimento e Resistenza di Vicenza.
Il titolo invita a riflettere sul significato profondo della parola “silenzio”, suggerendo di dare valore al percepire in assenza di verbalità. L’approccio alle riprese, semplice ed autentico, utilizza il cinema-documentario come mezzo espressivo. Si sviluppa attraverso inquadrature in bianco e nero degli interni ed esterni del Museo, del Parco di Villa Guiccioli, in cui lo stesso è ospitato, di reperti della collezione museale e di elementi naturalistici.
A fronte del silenzio quasi assordante degli spazi, attraversati da rumori lievi come il fruscio delle foglie, dal canto delle cicale o dai mormorii dei visitatori, non è necessario utilizzare un linguaggio propriamente verbale per creare narrazione. In questo contesto, il Museo si fa luogo di contemplazione e il silenzio può aprire porte ad un sentire invisibile che la parola, così come la conosciamo, forse impedisce.
Alla voce umana, il gravoso compito di riportare al dramma della guerra, grazie alla libera interpretazione di testimonianze di partigiane vicentine. Questo avviene tramite il canto e la recitazione, che, insieme ai suoni degli altri strumenti, strutturano la parte musicale dell’opera. Musica e immagini non hanno un ruolo marginale l'una rispetto all’altra, ma si completano vicendevolmente, creando una vera e propria sinergia.
